ADECCO, the world's biggest provider of temporary workers, last night became the latest company to be hit by accounting irregularities when it found "possible accounting issues" and delayed publication of its 2003 earnings.

The company's shares, traded in its home country of Switzerland, plunged as much as 47 per cent on the news, which comes in the wake of scandals at companies including Parmalat and Dutch retailer Royal Ahold.
The rout carved 6.6 billion Swiss francs ($6.25 billion) from the value of the company.

Official Swiss documents indicate Switzerland's secret banking laws may have been used to hide debt for the bankrupt global dairy company, Parmalat.
