Sonic Healthcare has spent $45 million on a controlling stake in a German pathology business founded by Dr Bernd Schottdorf and his wife, Gabriele.

The acquisition of the 56 per cent stake, which is conditional on German anti-trust approval, pleased the market and pushed Sonic shares up 5c to a 2-year high of $8.37.

Perfect conditions greeted the athletes as they entered the calm waters of Wallis Lake, for the first time in the history of the event, without the aid of wetsuits. Due to the unusually warm water temperatures (24.9 degrees C) in NSW, Triathlon Australia enforced the no-wetsuit rule which saw the race start resemble an early 80's event before the wetsuit became a mandatory piece of equipment.

SYDNEY (Dow Jones)--Sonic Healthcare Ltd. (SHL.AU), an Australian medical diagnostics company, said Tuesday it agreed to buy a 55.9% stake in German pathology company Schottdorf Group from a private investment fund.

Sonic will pay EUR28.46 million for the business and grant 3 million options exercisable at A$6.75 over five years to Schottdorf's founding pathologist, Bernd Schottdorf, and his wife, Gabriele Schottdorf, who is.... (read more)

You might think tasting 200 different wines sounds like a pretty good job!

But for judges at the National Riesling Challenge in Canberra this week, there hasn't been much time to relax and enjoy a cool glass of wine.

Six judges have had just two days to taste the 200 entries from across Australia and New Zealand, and choose the best wines to be awarded at a dinner tonight.
