Custody battle stuns tiny town

AN international custody battle involving two German children has ended in a tiny northern NSW town that's home to less than 30 people.

Police tracked the trio to the town which is just 13km from the Queensland border and an hour's drive north of Lightning Ridge.

Our Man In Madrid: Malaysia must find own style

IS the highly-disciplined and rigid German style suitable for Malaysia? This is a tricky but vital question after Malaysia's failure to qualify for the Athens Olympics and the removal of Paul Lissek as head coach.

Lissek had proven this style could work by winning the silver medal in the 1998 Commonwealth Games and also the bronze medal in the Busan Asian Games in 2002.

Credit should be given to him.

But this German strategy had not been able to produce.... (read more)

On July 24, 1959, Age journalist Claude Forell filled out an internal record form. On it, he listed his previous postings: in Canberra, on the subeditors' desk, as a shipping reporter. Interestingly, a space for "interests" was left blank. The oversight seems rather odd for one who has demonstrated such a zest for life.

For more than 50 years, Forell has.... (read more)
