Germany Draw a Blank Against Plucky Latvia
20.06.2004

Germany were held by Latvia in a goalless draw in Porto which put Rudi Völler's team in a precarious position in the Group of Death. German eyes will now turn to Aviero where the Dutch take on the Czech Republic.

Germany and Latvia had everything to play for in the Estadio do Bessa Seculo in Porto on Saturday afternoon as the last phase of the Group of Death drew near. With one game to play after this round, Germany was looking for the win which would elevate them above their rivals and the Latvians were playing for the points to save their tournament.

The Germans showed the kind of steel which they will need if they are to proceed to future rounds against the Dutch in their last game and started this match at a high tempo, rampaging down the flanks with Thorsten Frings showing the power and pace that attracted his new club Bayern Munich.

The Latvians were no slouches either in the first exchanges. Maris Verpakovskis demonstrated his... (read more)

AVEIRO, Portugal GROUP D ROUNDUP

As the temperature fell during the weekend, the tempo of the European soccer championships rose.

In Aveiro on Saturday night, a cool wind blew through the stadium of many colors as the Czech Republic produced one of the great comebacks of this or any other tournament, giving the Netherlands a two-goal start and then overhauling the Dutch to win, 3-2.

It was a triumph of tactics and tenacity. But so, in a way, was Latvia holding Germany to a scoreless draw in the same... (read more)

Germany's producer prices rise

BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhuanet) -- Producer prices in Germany, Europe's largest economy, rose for a fourth month in May as increasing global demand allowed companies including ThyssenKrupp AG - Germany's biggest steelmaker - to pass on higher energy costs, according to Monday's China Daily.

Prices for goods ranging from toys to machine tools rose by 0.5 per cent from April, when they increased by 0.4 per cent, the Federal Statistics Office in Wiesbaden said.

Economists expected a gain of 0.4 per cent, the median of 24 forecasts in a survey showed. From a year ago, prices have increased by 1.6 per cent.

"It's obviously energy driven," said Stephen Webster, an economist at 4Cast Ltd in London.

"But as far as consumer prices... (read more)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — France and Germany are rebuffing calls for more troops and help in Iraq.

Three U.S. senators traveling in Iraq made the rounds on the Sunday talk shows, calling on NATO and the two countries to send more soldiers and relieve Iraq's crushing debt.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist told Fox News, "It's really time that they do step up."

A government spokesman says the German chancellor "has said clearly that we will send no soldiers to Iraq." Germany trains... (read more)

EU Leaders, Agreed on Constitution, Now Need to Convince Voters

June 21 (Bloomberg) -- European Union leaders, after wrapping up two years of bargaining over a new constitution, now need to convince their 450 million citizens to accept the document as law.

As many as 14 of the EU's 25 countries, including Britain, will hold referendums on the new rulebook agreed upon late Friday. The constitution foresees the creation of the posts of permanent president and foreign minister and strengthens the EU's democratically elected parliament.

The next step, ratification, will be much more difficult,'' Elmar Brok, a German Christian Democrat in the EU parliament, said in an interview in Brussels after the talks ended. ``I'm trying not to think.... (read more)

Deutsche Post to Spur Postbank Demand With New Price

June 21 (Bloomberg) -- Deutsche Post AG's Chief Executive Klaus Zumwinkel is trying to rescue the public offering of the company's banking unit by cutting the price and reducing the number of shares after investors balked at the asking price.

``There's some face saving going on for Zumwinkel and all his friends who ignored the message of the market,'' said Neil Dwane, who oversees about $65 billion as chief investment officer for Europe at Allianz Dresdner Asset Management in Frankfurt.

Zumwinkel, 60, said yesterday he now expects to sell two- thirds of the 82 million Postbank shares to the public at 31.50 euros after he was forced to lower the price range by more than 10 percent. As of 10:42 a.m. in Frankfurt, the shares traded between 29.80 euros and 30.20 euros in the so-called gray market at German brokerage Lang & Schwarz Wertpapierhandel AG.

Bonn-based Deutsche Post Saturday lowered.... (read more)
